Burns Scores
-- 2023 XC --
9/23/23 - Manchester Invitational
Notes:
9/22/23 - Highest statewide Burns Scores as of Sep. 22
Individual Rankings (top 100 girls and top 100 boys)
9/19/23 - Kingdom Cup
Notes: St. Johnsbury trio Andrew Thornton-Sherman (96.4***), Emmett Johnson (95.4***), and Carson Eames (94.7**) dominates on the muddy Primeau Woods trails in Newport, Hazen's Casandra Royer (83.3) easily wins a less competitive girls race
9/16/23 - Nashua North (NH) Invitational (U-32 Boys) + Bonus Tully Scores
Notes: Cyrus Hansen's 15:32 is the second fastest Vermont 5k time (Tyler Marshall 15:24) recorded by Athletic.net in its 18-year history, U-32 Boys place second to some top NH teams
Just when I thought it couldn't get faster than "Burlington," Mines Falls managed to stake its claim as the fastest course traversed by Vermonters in at least the past decade.
9/13/23 - St. J Meet
Notes: Andrew Thornton-Sherman (90.2*)
9/9/23 - Burlington Invitational (@ Hard'ack)(with Tully Scores)
Notes: Estella Laird (93.9**) and the CVU girls dominate once again, Essex girls pack it up nicely, Porter Hurteau (94.2**) leads three other Bobwhites and 11 total boys under 17:00, BFA still falls to the impressive depth of CVU (16:52 avg) and Montpelier
Maybe the fastest "5k" course in VT history. Already a very fast course (especially in the right conditions like Saturday), Hard'ack was weirdly cut ~.05 miles short to make for some insane time-inflation. Folks ran an average of 60-70 seconds faster than Essex and nearly everyone PRed.
9/5/23 - Rutland SVL Meet
Notes: Woodstock juniors Izzy Cellini and James Underwood win
9/2/23 - Essex Invitational
Notes: Seems like the Hornets brought out the bees to slow everyone down today... mud and heat didn't help much either. Nonetheless, XC (and Burns Scores) are back! CVU girls pick up right where they left off (5 in the top 7), and Cyrus Hansen (93.6**) wins handily
-- 2022 XC --
11/26/22 - NXR Northeast
Notes: Tess Drury (97.4***) qualifies for Nike Cross Nationals and Matthew Servin accomplishes the first 100+ rating in Burns Scores history: 101.1*****. To put Servin's elite performance in perspective, his Tully Runners Speed Rating of 190 (189.90) is VT's highest of all time on the Tully website (someone should double check me on this). Tyler Marshall actually ran a couple seconds faster on the Bowdoin Park course at the 2016 Northeast Regional but his score was just a tad lower: 189.37.
11/25/22 - Highest statewide Burns Scores as of Nov. 25
Individual Rankings (Top 162 girls and top 166 boys)
+ Full divisional rankings
Notes: Penultimate rankings - unless someone makes Nationals...
11/12/22 - New England Championship
Notes: A rough day for Vermont all-around, but Tess Drury (3rd) and Matthew Servin (9th) represent the state well with elite individual performances and new VT #1 scores of 98.2**** and 99.5****, respectively
11/11/22 - New England Projections
Notes: My projections for what people will run tomorrow at the Ponaganset course, assuming that they perform equally as well as their best performance this year (also assuming regular weather/course conditions)
11/11/22 - Highest statewide Burns Scores as of Nov. 11
Individual Rankings (Top 162 girls and top 166 boys)
No divisional rankings this week - they are unnecessary
Team Rankings (Top 6 girls teams and top 6 boys teams going into New Englands)
11/5/22 - Meet of Champions
Notes: A windy day at Hard'ack means a boost in the scores. Avery Smart and Luke Miklus both go 98+ and Estella Laird runs a 96.1*** to lead an impressive CVU victory
11/4/22 - Highest statewide Burns Scores as of Nov. 4
Individual Rankings (Top 162 girls and top 166 boys)
+ New divisional rankings! The top individuals in D1, D2, and D3.
Team Rankings - Not updated yet (Top 10 girls teams and top 13 boys teams)
10/29/22 - Vermont State Championship
Notes: Matthew Servin (98.6****) spearheads 27 boys to elite (90+) scores, with a majority achieving Burns Score PRs, 3 girls go 96+ in a tight D1 individual race, and CVU once again dominates with an average of 20:36 - likely New England favorites?
10/27/22 - Highest statewide Burns Scores as of Oct. 27
Individual Rankings (Top 150 girls and top 150 boys)
+ New divisional rankings! The top individuals in D1, D2, and D3.
Team Rankings - Not updated yet (Top 10 girls teams and top 13 boys teams)
10/22/22 - NVAC Mountain Division Championships
Notes: Avery Smart (98.2****) runs substantially faster than anybody not named ETS has ever run at St. J, joining Matthew Servin in the 98 club
10/21/22 - SVL - A Championships
Notes: Erin Geisler (91.6*) and Matheo Gallazzini (91.8*) win at Northwood Park in Rutland
10/21/22 - MMU Meet #2
Notes: Tess Drury drops an 18:48 on her home course to earn another 3-star rating (96.1***)
10/20/22 - Highest statewide Burns Scores as of Oct. 20
Individual Rankings (Top 140 girls and top 140 boys)
+ New divisional rankings! The top individuals in D1, D2, and D3.
Team Rankings (Top 10 girls teams and top 13 boys teams)
Notes: No crazy changes in the rankings, but the return of Cormac Leahy boosted the Craftsbury boys to 5th in the team rankings, and the St. J girls and Harwood girls also moved up a spot. Expect the crucial top-6 for NE qualifying spots to be hotly contested at States, especially on the boys side with BFA - St. Albans knocking on SB's door.
10/18/22 - Spaulding Meet at Millstone Trails
Notes: Charlie Flint (87.6) and Indy Metcalf (86.6) lead Harwood sweep. Don't know if there is a slower course in the state than Millstone
10/15/22 - Burnt Hills (NY) Invitational
Notes: Luke Miklus runs 15:45 and continues his rapid ascent towards the top of the statewide rankings with a 96.5***as he and Scarlet Stimson (95.6***) both jump up to 3rd in Vermont
10/15/22 - NVAC Chittenden Championship
Notes: Tess Drury (18:44) vs. Alice Kredell (18:46) comes down to the wire just as the rankings predicted (97.2 to 97.3), Matthew Servin wins comfortably, and very few runners achieve a Burns Scores PR - saving it for states perhaps?
10/13/22 - Highest statewide Burns Scores as of Oct. 13
Individual Rankings (Top 125 girls and top 125 boys)
+ New divisional rankings! The top individuals in D1, D2, and D3.
Team Rankings (Top 10 girls teams and top 13 boys teams)
Notes: Woods Trail and several other large invitationals from the past two Saturdays caused substantial shifts in both the individual and team rankings. As improvement slows down and teams race more sparingly in preparation for the postseason, the "playoff" picture is starting to materialize for States and beyond...
10/11/22 - Rutland SVL #2
Notes: Erin Geisler (89.3) and Zed McNaughton (89.1) win, Stratton Mountain debuts with some decent Top-100 performances
Also: I omitted the Tuesday meets at Hartford and Lamoille as I deemed them unworthy of speed-rating due to a lack of significant results
10/8/22 - Saratoga (NY) Invitational (Burlington)
Notes: Avi Yagoda runs 16:12 - the second-best time in VT this year - for a Burns Score of 94.2**
10/8/22 - Ponaganset (RI) Covered Bridge Classic
Notes: Essex girls and Craftsbury boys scope out the New Englands course as Scarlet Stimson (93.7**) and Charlie Kehler (93.6**) earn two stars each
10/8/22 - Manhattan (NY) Invitational
Notes: Alice Kredell runs 15:06 on the 2.5 mile course to earn a new Burns Scores #1 Ranking: 97.3***, Matthew Servin (98.6****) churns out yet another 98+ performance, CVU girls (4th in Eastern States!) and St. J boys (led by ATS's 95.4***) continue to prove their #1 ranking
10/8/22 - Harwood Invitational
Notes: Winners Julia Thurston (89.7) and Noah Rivera (89.9) miss "star-rated" performances by the skin of their teeth. I evaluated this course as slightly faster (3-5 seconds) than Thetford.
10/4/22 - Rice Meet
Notes: Jack Kelley (86.7) and Virginia Cobb (85.3) win comfortably on one of the faster courses in the state
10/4/22 - St. J Meet
Notes: A very large weekday meet but Andrew Thornton-Sherman (90.2*) is the lone elite performer
10/1/22 - Maine XC Festival of Champions (Harwood)
Notes: Charlie Flint (89.6) leads a good team performance for the Highlander girls and Indy Metcalf runs an 88.9 on the boys side
10/1/22 - Woods Trail Run
Notes: 608 802 runners race the hilly Thetford course, and Matthew Servin (98.4****) and Tess Drury (97.2***) stand above the rest by 20+ seconds each, with the latter earning a new Burns Scores #1 statewide ranking. 10 girls (4 from CVU) and 21 boys (4 from St. J & 4 from CVU) achieve elite performances on a nice day at Vermont's Oldest Secondary School
9/29/22 - Highest statewide Burns Scores as of Sep. 29
Individual Rankings (Top 100 girls and top 100 boys)
Team Rankings (Top 9 girls teams and top 9 boys teams)
+ New this week: Divisional rankings! The top individuals in D1, D2, and D3. Interestingly enough, the distribution on the girls side for D1:D2:D3 is 59:31:10, and on the boys side it's 58:30:12. Statistics are cool.
Notes: The Manchester Invitational shook things up quite a bit, and I expect Saturday's Woods Trail Run to do the same!
9/26/22 - Danville Meet
Notes: Nothing notable
9/24/22 - Stowe Meet
Notes: 2/3 of all racers PR on the flat and fast (and a bit long) course, St. J girls put 5 under 23 and Stowe boys put 5 under 20
9/24/22 - Manchester Invitational
Notes: Avery Smart 96.6*** (16:16) and ATS 95.1*** (16:32) join the three-star club and Cyrus Hansen (94.96**) nearly does the same, Alice Kredell 96.0*** (19:08) finishes 2nd and now has some closer company atop the rankings in Tess Drury (94.9**) and Scarlet Stimson (94.4**), CVU girls dominate as their pack continues to improve.
Also: I added a column of Woods Trail Projections which are the times I would expect each athlete to run at Thetford on Saturday assuming they perform at exactly the same level that they did at Manchester. Since runners are improving a lot right now, I expect that the actual times will be slightly faster than the projections.
9/24/22 - Choiniere Family Farm Meet
Notes: John Viens defends his title and extends his win streak to three with a 90.9* in windy conditions
9/22/22 - Highest statewide Burns Scores as of Sep. 22
Individual Rankings (Top 100 girls and top 100 boys)
Team Rankings (Top 9 girls teams and top 8 boys teams)
Notes: With the U-32 Invitational and the Queensbury Invitational causing big shifts in both the individual and team rankings, the stage is set for Manchester on Saturday!
9/20/22 - Mt. Abe Meet
Notes: Small meet, Middlebury girls and boys teams sweep
9/17/22 - Queensbury Invitational (Vermont results only)
Notes: Wanted to keep my ratings local but the results were too fast to ignore: 18:37 for Alice Kredell who updates her VT #1 score to 96.3***, 15:44 for Matthew Servin (97.8****), and CVU girls display incredible depth with 19:52 average and 7 under 21. I didn't know much about the Queensbury course (just that it was fast), but I was able to use the Tully scores as a very useful guide.
9/17/22 - U-32 Invitational
Notes: Amy Felice 91.1* wins, followed closely by Kaitlyn Lumbra 90.8*, and Beth McIntosh 90.7*- these three are now ranked #6, #7, and #8 in VT. On the boys side, John Viens 92.4* just misses a two-star rating but jumps to VT #6, U-32 boys pack it up nicely
9/16/22 - St. J @ MMU
Notes: Tess Drury 93.7** (VT #3) leads impressive MMU trio, Andrew Thornton-Sherman 92.9** and St. J boys (89.7 avg) with another good performance
Note: I chose not to score the NVAC St. J meet on 9/14 or the Milton meet on 9/15 due to very few significant results - even those that ran fast didn't beat their highest score and so neither meet affected statewide rankings.
9/13/22 - Highest statewide Burns Scores as of Sep. 13
Individual Rankings (Top 75 girls and top 75 boys)
Team Rankings (Top 7 girls teams and top 7 Boys teams)
9/10/22 - Burlington Invitational (@ Hard'ack)
Notes: Matthew Servin runs 15:37 (98.8**** rating) for the fastest Vermont 5k since Tyler Marshall (15:24) in 2016! Alice Kredell 95.1*** and CVU girls dominate, ATS 93.3** helps St. J boys edge out CVU in the Hilltoppers' impressive season debut, and both the CVU girls and Essex boys absolutely crush the JV competition
9/7/22 - Lyndon Home Meet
Notes: Charlotte Young 77.8 and AJ Esposito 82.7 win on the slow Lyndon course
9/6/22 - Rutland SVL Meet
Notes: Erin Geisler 84.7, Samuel Kay 88.9 win small races. These ratings have been updated, they were originally too high.
9/3/22 - Essex Invitational➡Scores out now!
Notes: Alice Kredell 93.0** leads CVU girls, Matthew Servin 96.4*** defends title and U-32 boys win on a relatively slow and unimpressive day all around
Star-Rating System

**2 Stars**: 92.5-95.0
***3 Stars***: 95.0-97.5
